“And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him.And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.” Mark 8:11-12
Why doth this generation seek after a sign?
This is an evil generation: so beware!
“And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod, Mark 8:15. He says in John 4:48 ”Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.”
The Pharisees, and Herodians were united in making unreasonable demands to have a sign from heaven, (as we probably do these days) in proof of his own Messiahship, and opposing the claims of Jesus.
“….This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.” Luke 11:29-30
And back to Mark, Jesus asked his disciples, Whom do men say that I am?….And whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.” (Mark 8:27-29).
Thou art the Christ!
There shall no sign be given this generation, but the sign of Christ, (the Messiah, the Redeemer, the Lamb of God) that of the Cross (pain, suffering, death, agony) and victory or resurrection.
“And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his own cross also, and follow me. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” Mark 8:34 – 38
You want to be his followers?
In this sinful generation, these days of unbelief and sin, don’t be ashamed to put aside your own life, to throw it away and take your own cross too, then follow Jesus close enough – just as he laid us an example.
He that overcame said,
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
So beware of leaven, especially of this generation, “a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit [is] not stedfast with God.” Psalm 78:7-8
And Jesus rebuking Peter turned about and looked on his disciples and said, “….thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men,” (Mark 8:33). Every disciples well instructed, has his mind set on the will of God.
