“And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is , God.” Luke 18:19
TLB version says, “Do you realize what you are saying when you call me ‘good’?”
It’s common practice among Christians to flatter each other; giving excessive compliments especially on servants of God. They do it in order to gain approval, favour or to be seen positively. But does it help? Zero chances it does.
Jesus said, “…Why callest thou me good?”
The man who said this was a religious leader, a Jewish ruler and rich man. Maybe he thought he’s found someone of same charisma, what’s also your motives behind joining that church? God knows why he did it but this man’s mistake is he tried to gain control over Jesus psychologically. Don’t come with that attitude to influence, manipulate and to become likeable. You may succeed here but would be hard for you to enter into the kingdom of God.
“Do you realize what you are doing when you call me ‘good’?”
In Mark 7:11-13 Jesus says,
“But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free . And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.”
Some traditions are no good, only good at “Making the word of God of none effect …”
Do you realize what you are doing when you call me ‘good’? the promise will be of no effect.
1 John 5:6-9 says,
“This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.“
- the witness of God is greater, and so surely we can believe whatever God declares. He is good not because people say it but that God declared it.
- If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater!
What else is it that God has said? That he has given us eternal life and that this life is in his Son.
