What’s a soul tie?

A friend asked me what’s soul tie? You may find this helpful also. Although the Bible speaks of what is today known as soul ties, it does not itself use the word soul tie, but it speaks of them when it talks about souls being knit together, becoming one flesh, etc. A soul tie is like a covenant, a linkage or union in the soul or spirit between two people. Some use cloths, blood, bands, rings, etc, as examples to link their souls together, it brings forth both good results or negative results all depending on how it all started.

The positive effect of a soul tie: in a marriage, God links the two together and the Bible tells us that they become one flesh. As a result of them becoming one flesh, it binds them together and they will cleave onto one another in a unique way. The purpose of this cleaving is to build a very healthy, strong and close relationship between a man and a woman.

Matthew 19:5, “And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh.”

Soul ties can also be found in strong or close friendships. They are not just limited to marriage, as we can see with King David and Jonathan:

1 Samuel 18:1, “And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”

The negative effect of a soul tie: Soul ties can also be used for the devil’s advantage. Soul ties formed from sex outside of marriage causes a person to become defiled:

Genesis 34:2-3, “And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her. And his soul cleaved unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spoke kindly unto the damsel.”

This is why it is so common for a person to still have ‘feelings’ towards an ex-lover that they have no right to be attracted to in that way. Even years down the road, a person may still think of their first lover… even if he or she is across the country and has their own family, all because of a soul tie!

Demonic spirits can also take advantage of ungodly soul ties, and use them to transfer spirits between one person to another.

Ezekiel 23:17, “And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their whoredom, and she was polluted with them.”

So in it’s simplest form, it ties two souls together in the spiritual realm. Soul ties between married couples draw them together like magnets, while soul ties between fornicators can draw a beaten and abused woman to the man which in the natural realm she would hate and run from, but instead she runs to him even though he doesn’t love her, and treats her like dirt. In the demonic world, unholy soul ties can serve as bridges between two people to pass demonic garbage through.

So there are other ways which soul ties are formed, but these are some that I am aware of sexual relations, close relationships and vows, commitments and agreements: Vows are known to bind the soul (Numbers 30:2)
