We behaved ourselves…

We behaved ourselves among you who believe!

“But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness: Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.” 1 Thessalonians 2:4-6 KJV

Paul says we have been approved, rather trusted by God to preach the good news. The Apostles were entrusted with the gospel because they also were behaving themselves among believers.

Here is how they did it;

They spoke as they were messengers from God

  • even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts, 1 Thessalonians 2:4

They never once tried to win people with flattery

  • For neither at any time did we use flattering words, as you know, nor a cloak for covetousness— God is witness, 1 Thessalonians 2:5

They never asked for admiration

  • Nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, when we might have made demands as apostles of Christ, 1 Thessalonians 2:6

They were gentle and caring

  • But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children, 1 Thessalonians 2:7

They were loving and ready to sacrifice their own lives

  • we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us, 1 Thessalonians 2:8

They were not burdensome but always hard working

  • labouring night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God, 1 Thessalonians 2:9

They were pure, honest and faultless

  • we behaved ourselves among you who believe, 1 Thessalonians 2:10

They were responsible; fatherly, exhorting and encouraging

  • we exhorted, and comforted, and charged b every one of you, as a father does his own children, 1 Thessalonians 2:11

The result of what was achieved was stunning, for despite the persecution many people received the word, and welcomed it “not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.” Thessalonians 2: 13

For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, [though Satan hindered us] that it was not in vain.” 1 Thessalonians 2:1
