Walk worthy of the calling

Walk worthy of the calling

“…ye are called in one hope of your calling…” Ephesians 4:4

We are called to the same glorious future, that we be led along together by the Holy Spirit to that same glorious hope.

Concerning that glorious hope, Jesus in John 17:9-11 said, “I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine…Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

That’s our calling brethren, that we be one, or we be at peace with one another, just as we are all parts of one body, and one Spirit, One Lord, one faith, one baptism, “One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” (ref, Ephesians 4:4-6).

  • for we are members one of another.

A call for unity among God’s people

Paul is begging us, “…that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:1-3

Lowliness

  • not pushy or desiring to defend our own rights and advance our own agenda.

Meekness

  • Submitting one to another

Longsuffering

  • forgiving and generous, not bent on taking revenge.

Forbearing

  • patient and restrained

Endeavouring

  • try hard to keep the unity of the Spirit

Let’s see that we’re on course, not strolling along with malice.

Ephesians 4:23-24,27 says,

[23] And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; [24] And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. [27] Neither give place to the devil.

Spiritual gifts

“But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. [8] Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. [9] (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? [10] He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)” Ephesians 4:7-10 KJV

The giving of spiritual gifts to the church is God’s doing and is a way of bringing unity among us. To each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. This is the basis for God’s distribution of spiritual gifts through His church – grace! No one deserves it! It is no something  earned but spiritual gifts freely given.

The purpose of spiritual gifts in the church

Ephesians 4:11-16 says,

[11] And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; [12] For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: [13] Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: [14] That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; [15] But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: [16] From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

“…And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers…”

Jesus himself established these offices in the church, not men. They are given at his own discretion, by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:11). Church leadership shouldn’t is hinder such ministries, but also they should not be created.

For the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry

The purpose of these gifts of leadership is that saints, God’s people, might be equipped for the work of the ministry, so that the body of Christ would be built up, put right, strengthened and grow.
