Why is light given to a man?

We are all frightened about something and most of us worry about lots of things, don’t we? These worries are not the same for everyone of course, and they differ over time.

Job 3:20-26 says;

“Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures; Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave? Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in? For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters. For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me. I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.”

Key words to highlight there are misery, fear and trouble. Most of us become sad when we lose something, say an opportunity or a beloved one, or when we lose control in our own lives. When we lose control and become sad this also worries us, and maybe fall into depression, and misery is the end result.

In the above scripture Job was going through a whole lot of negative experiences. Life throws at us everything, it doesn’t matter your right standing with God. Even though, it is normal that we all should experience these emotional shifts of misery; sadness, due to loss, and fear, because we’ve been threatened. Thus life should frighten us sometimes, just as it should depress us and bless us too.

Ecclesiastes 3:10-11 says, “I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it. He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.” The capacity to become depressed, to have a reactive depression, to mourn loss, is something that is not inborn, nor is it an illness; it comes as achievement of healthy emotional growth. Life is not always easy, it is sometimes difficult. It wasn’t easy for those before us either.

Hebrews 6:10-12 says, “….we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Anyway, pastor just wanted you to understand distress both as part of us and as a vehicle for avoiding an honest acknowledgement of our challenges and responsibilities in life.

Paul says, “But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.” 2 Timothy 4:5

More next time…

God bless you,

Bible verse of the day

Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.
