“O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” Romans 7:24
Two struggles happen in the life of a believer;
1. Inside you, with your heart you delight in the law of God, you’re sure about it that the law of God is good. So inwardly, your inward man wants to do that which is good, that’s to serve God.
Paul says, “That is why I felt fine so long as I did not understand what the law really demanded. But when I learned the truth, I realized that I had broken the law and was a sinner, doomed to die. So as far as I was concerned, the good law which was supposed to show me the way of life resulted instead in my being given the death penalty. Sin fooled me by taking the good laws of God and using them to make me guilty of death.” Romans 7:9-11
Many believers are fine, so long as they do not understand what the law or God really demands of them. They feel ok so long as inwardly, inside them, they delight in the law of God. Who doesn’t know that the law of God is good? Everyone, through their inward man they also want to do that which is good.
But, when you learn the truth, you realise something new, how much you’re doomed to die ‘in breaking God’s law.’ Paul cried, “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” Romans 7:24
To be honest, it’s not you that actually breaks the law of God. “But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence….” (Romans 7:8). “For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me” (Romans 7:11). “Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me” (Romans 7:17). So who does it? Sin does it!
This takes us now to my next point.
2. Inside you, in your flesh, “dwelleth no good thing“ (Romans 7:18). “You’re carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I” (Romans 7:14-15). With your flesh, the “…evil which I would not, that I do.“ (Romans 7:19). The flesh is rendered useless because you’ve been sold under sin. No wonder Jesus said, “Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” John 3:7
“What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.” Romans 7:7
“But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.” Romans 7:23
It is not the law of God that’s defeated but “the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.” Your delight in the law of God is rendered useless! Romans 7:18 says, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.”
Let me conclude with these verses;
“Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.” Romans 7:4-6
