“Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:13-16
The Apostle is saying, be sober! Look forward soberly and intelligently to more of God’s grace and kindness than you look or hope for other things. I would like everyone that they be positive minded however know also that’s not the true gospel. Only God’s grace, mercy, favour, election and kindness is worthwhile holding to.
Positive thinking is a mental and emotional attitude that focuses on the bright side of life and expects positive results. It’s the right thing to do but is not enough to see you through. Hebrews 11:6 says, “But without faith it is impossible to please him : for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
Let me quickly say positive thinking is not faith and each mustn’t be confused with the other. A positive person anticipates happiness, health and success, and believes he or she can overcome any obstacle and difficulty. But although we can do that, God is the determining factor of what shall happen. Faith is complete trust and confidence in God, believing that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
When God is helping you, he is doing it because you’ve faith, because you believe, because you trust in him. He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him not of them that have positive thinking. I told a friend today that many of those Jesus touched was because they’d believed but not because they had a right mindset. Romans 8:6 says, “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” Positive thinking is that to do with carnal mind, which “is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. (ref Romans 8:7-8).
James 4:12-17 says,
 There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another? Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
For example, hear this story which Jesus taught the people;
 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. Luke 12:16-22 KJV
Positive thinking appears to be a subject gaining popularity among many, as evidenced by the many books, teachings and courses about it, even among preachers, great and small they all seem to talk about it. But positive thinking is not a concept that you as a believer should lean on. It is more of a doctrine of man but not the fulness of Christ. “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.” (Ephesians 4:14). “So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.” Romans 9:16
What is it then, is positive thinking anything? Believe you me, it’s all vanity of vanities and vexation of the spirit. How come, there is a growing number of people, who accept positive thinking as a fact, and believe in its effectiveness? That’s all to do with the sleight of men.
To use it in your life, you need more than just to be aware of its existence. You need to adopt the attitude of positive thinking in everything you do. But know philosophical idealism and personal experiences have crept into the church, in the process derailing or overthrowing the faith of some. Paul says, “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.” 1 Corinthians 1:17.
1 Timothy 4:1 – 2 says, “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron.”
Idealism is on the rise and so many of our modern day preachers have embraced it. “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” 2 Timothy 2:19.
Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
