Leadership and followership

Followership is closely linked with leadership, and because the two are interdependent, the outcome produced is obviously successful, but is it the case in the spiritual realm?

A friend of mine said, “why do you always send me sermons? I know where to go if I need to be preached to.” Fair enough! I asked the Lord, is it how things should be with the great commission, that we should go to church when we feel like going?

There are two things, concepts rather, Jesus left for his disciples, that of leadership, and followership, and every believer should embrace these conditions in order to have a successful pilgrimage. Followership is a function of the follower, and a process of attaining one’s individual goals of being influenced by a leader into participating in group efforts towards our main goal. You shouldn’t be distracted from that main point, i.e., pursuing the faith. The problem is some believers still don’t know that “we are members one of another” (Ephesians 4:25). This is because some evil workers are bent on dividing us. Ephesians 5:30 says, “For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.” Let that sink in your spirit.

Our leader is one, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and our Lord Jesus Christ, and we all are his followers. “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time” (1 Timothy 2:5-6). So I am not declaring myself ‘Bruce Almighty’ by sending you a sermon, I’m rather saying let’s all be followers of His.

We are all followers, but what we gain from that relationship can vary widely depending on our reasons for following, our enthusiasm for the methods and goals of the leader, (who of course is not your pastor but the Lord Jesus Christ) and our own skills and characteristics depending on whom you’ve learned, and in our case the Holy Ghost is a good teacher. True, believers are empowered with the tools to choose, create, enrich and share but obviously that has boundaries in the faith when dealing with God, it’s not who you trust that matters but God who should control the process. Our problem and dilemma is people still want to control the status quo.

Anyway good nyt
Laurence

What ministry do you help in your church?

Bible verse of the day

Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.
