Understandest thou what thou readest?

In Genesis chapter 40 there is the story of the chief baker and the chief butler jailed in the prison where Joseph was. One night each of them had a dream, and the next morning Joseph noticed that they looked dejected and sad. “What in the world is the matter?” he asked. And they replied, “We both had dreams last night, but there is no one here to tell us what they mean.” Joseph replied, “Interpreting dreams is God’s business. Tell me what you saw.”

As believers we like reading the bible but sometimes the moment we open it we feel like we are locked up in a prison cell and so us the book, it is a closed up. Philip asked the Ethiopian Eunuch, “Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me?” Acts 8:30-31

So Joseph asked, “What in the world is the matter?” And they replied, “We both had dreams last night, but there is no one here to tell us what they mean.”

Many believers understand what that means; “Joseph noticed that they looked dejected and sad.” I understand the frustration, it’s like someone is telling you there is God and how he is a spirit but then turns out to say go search for him. The Ethiopian Eunuch, “how can I, except some man should guide me.”

Joseph said, “What in the world is the matter?

The reason you need someone to guide you is because the Bible is one difficult book to read, and to apply, also it has lots of inconsistencies.

  1. Difficult to read because there are no clear instructions. It is silent on particular issues. It is sometimes ambiguous, unclear and confusing.
  2. Difficult to apply, not all events can be forseen, making it difficult to realities life.
  3. Inconsistencies, with the other verses. It requires clarification.

However Joseph replied, “Interpreting dreams is God’s business. Tell me what you saw.

That’s all you probably need to do – dream!

Daniel said, “…O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation.” Daniel 2:4

Your business is to tell what you saw, it is not to give meaning. 2 Peter 1:20-21 says, “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”

Sometimes don’t waste your time, trying to interpret scripture yourself, “holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

The effect of interpretation is to make the word real by giving definition and meaning to what you saw. “Interpreting dreams is God’s business. Tell me what you saw.”

God bless,
Laurence
