The quest to know God

Jesus said, “…ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32

Every believer has that privilege, to know the truth concerning God and his relation to mankind. Everyone has a privilege of constructing and presenting a system of thought concerning God.

David prayed, “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law” (Psalm 119:18). Your life and destiny is affected by how you believe about God and his will. “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…” (Proverbs 23:7). Nothing so affects the spirit and character of a believer as his knowledge of God, or lack of it. Luke 10:41-42 says “And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” Nothing twists and deforms the soul more than a low conception of God.

What does Paul say to Timothy? He says, “study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). Jesus said to the scribe who had answered him discreetly, “Thou art not far from the kingdom of God” (Mark 12:34).

Can man ever know God?

Let me teach you a little bit of theology;

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.” Romans 1:18-21

Is it possible to know God?

Certainly, actually “they knew God,” yet “they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”

But “the invisible things of him [God] from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead.” The fact is the universe reveals the existence of God so that non has any excuse.

Is it possible that men can know God? Yes they can, in so many ways God reveals himself to humanity. Hebrews 1:1-2 says, “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.

If you’ve done theology they tell you that there are five kinds of theology; natural, biblical, dogmatic, practical and proper. Forget about the rest for now but biblical is primarily concerned with what is contained in the scriptures both old and new. In both books are all the necessary information that is needed in order to know the Lord which Hebrews 1:1-2 says, “God…hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.” Biblical theology however does not disregard true truth found elsewhere whether it be from a scientific research. The only downside with say, natural theology, is somehow this system of belief isn’t capable enough to address to spiritual matters the way biblical Theology.

Some believers don’t like to use the term “Theology” but this only means “The study of God” as he is revealed in the Bible. Now, can a man ever know God? Divine revelation, (Revealed Theology) is the leading source of the knowledge of God, his will and your service to God. Theology proper seeks to understand and know God as a person – God is not an idol, He exists as a person worthy of praise and worship. That’s how you relate with Him, you glorify him as God, and be thankful.

Praise ye the Lord,
