God is one
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord : And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” Deut 6:4-5
The Scriptures tells us that there is but one God; and all people of the earth must know; “that the Lord is God, and that there is none else.” 1 Kings 8:60
The Substance of God
“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). He is pure spirit unmixed with matter.
The Personality of God
He’s a personal Being with all facets involved in personality. He’s self consciousness and self determined; he creates, sustain life, loves, exalts, answers, repents, concerned, etc.
The Attributes of God
An attribute is a mark that distinguishes, so anything that’s true about God is an attribute. If you say “God is Love” – Love becomes his divine attribute, so is Holy, Mercy, and all that you can say concerning God.
His other attributes are; he’s sovereign, immutable, eternal, infinite, omnipresent, etc. God can do all things because he’s sovereign.
God is able;
- to keep us from falling, Jude 1:24
- to perform that he promised, Rm 4:21
- to give us grace, 1 Cor 10:13
- to sudue all things, Phil 3:21
- to do abundantly above all that we ask, Eph 3:20
- to keep that which you commit to him, 2 Tim 1:12
God is transcended meaning he’s beyond and above all creation. He also works within and through his creation, and best word there is Immanent.
“Thine, O Lord , is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine ; thine is the kingdom, O Lord , and thou art exalted as head above all. Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.” 1 Chronicles 29:11-13
There are three persons in the Godhead, Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
In Scripture the distinction of the three persons is plain, that they’re united in purpose but not in substance, or are they equal in power and glory. They each know their place.
Jesus refers to the Father as God
“Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” John 20:17
Jesus also was recognised as God by the Apostles, (John 1:1). And the prophets, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6
The doctrine of Trinity is a matter of revelation not a concept of truth, those are ideas that members of the Godhead are equal in substance, power and glory. Truth is that we are most sure about – we want theories, not hypotheses, ambiguities or forgeries. Why do you believe in the Holy Spirit? Because scriptures says so – it’s not a hearsay. Don’t I believe in revelation? I do but not that which tries to rewrite scripture. So it is better for me that I affirm to you what scripture says in simple terms, concerning the Godhead than try to affirm to you revelation knowledge. “That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?” Proverbs 22:21
Anyway, The members of the Godhead are; Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
Grace be unto you, and peace (Holy Ghost) from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Names of God
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:9-10
Hallowed be thy name.
My purpose in writing this article is to explore the names of God with you. Names yes, because it isn’t one but many. They’re exhaustive, 23 major ones and more than 40 compound names of Jehovah.
Each of God’s names reveals more about his nature and character towards his people, and He revealed these names only at a moment his people needed him most. You may probably say that’s how I want to learn him also. It’s ok to study them but don’t worry too about them if you couldn’t remember them all because he has made life much easier for you.
In reality, God has only one name – I AM.
“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” Exodus 3:14
He is saying, My name is I AM – I want my people to remember it, that I AM what ever you need, at any point in your life. Hebrews also used other names which describes his nature, and often people have called these names, the names of God but like I said above they only express who our Lord is and what he is like.
Is it important for us to know all these names of God? Nay!
Only the revealed name is important.
As far as the things of God are concerned, don’t worry a lot about truths that needs digging, for if its not revealed through scripture then it’s not yours. Important information is the one revealed already document, not 21st century revelations. The Bible has enough information needed for us to know the Lord. Concerning the names of God, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Philippians 2:9-10 says, “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth.” All the other names, good as they are but these were not given to us, not El Elyon, El Shaddai or Jehovah and the list goes on.
Jesus says in John 16:23-28;
And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
You don’t have to memorize all these hollowed names, nor are you to recite them during your prayers and devotions.
“God…Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things…” Hebrews 1:1-2
Bless you in Jesus’ name,
