Tithing was a requirement of the law in which all Israelites were to give 10% of everything, of the crops and the animals they earned.
But now Believers in Christ are under no obligation to give tithes of their income, whether it’s 10% of whatever because there is no such commandment in the New Testament.
Nowhere in the New Testament it even states that Christians should tithe. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 16:1–2 that believers should set aside a portion of their income as a relief offering, for the poor, but not that we should tithe. In Galatians 2:9-10 Paul says, “And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.”
Giving the 10 percent tithe was only commanded to Israelites. When Christ died on the cross, a new covenant was established. He fulfilled the requirements of the Law and made tithing obsolete. To continue to insist that it is still in effect is to nullify, at least in part, the sacrifice of Christ and return to the idea of justification by works of the law. The first fruits offering found its fulfillment in Jesus. “But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Corinthians 15:20).
An offering is that which is freely given by Christians only for the purpose of supporting other Christian believers. It’s wrong that we should gather every Sunday that we should give tithes and offerings.
It is worthy mentioning Christians who at this present day and age give tithes and offerings do so not because God demands of it but the practice is merely voluntary.
We are to offer much more to God than our monetary resources. Romans 12:1 exhorts us to offer our bodies “as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God” as part of our worship.
God is not nearly as interested in our monetary offerings as He is in our submission and obedience. The truth is that He doesn’t need our resources to accomplish His plans and purposes.
“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” Galatians 2:16
False Christians are people who try to get you tied up in their own rules, that they might again bring you into bondage.
The best way to deal with them is not to listen to them.
Galatians 2:5 – 6 says “to whom we did not yield submission even for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you. But from those who seemed to be something-whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God shows personal favoritism to no man-for those who seemed to be something added nothing to me.”
Should we therefore tithe, No! Should we give offerings? Not in the way it’s done in our churches these days.
