“Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.” 1 Thessalonians 1:4
God himself chose you, when you listened to the good news – thanks to God for those who brought us the gospel. You may not be aware; what you received, produced a powerful effect upon you, “For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake,” (1 Thessalonians 1:5). The gospel is such a strong force; “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12
Something supernatural happened to you because you were able to listen to the good news with such great interest.
Peter says, “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.” 1 Peter 2:9 -10
Does it mean anything to you to know that you’re chosen of God; you’ve obtained mercy and now you’re a people of God?
1 Thessalonians 2:13 says,
“For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.”
It all started when you “became our followers and the Lord’s; for you received our message with joy from the Holy Spirit in spite of the trials and sorrows it brought you,” 1 Thessalonians 1:6
What it should mean to say you’re the elect?
It means you’ve been chosen or singled out;
- to became an example to all the other Christians, 1 Thessalonians 1:7
- to spread out the Word the of God to others everywhere, 1 Thessalonians 1:8
- to became hospitable, 1 Thessalonians 1:9
- to turn away from your idols to God so that now the living and true God is only your Master, 1 Thessalonians 1:9
- to look forward to the return of Jesus from heaven, 1 Thessalonians 1:10
“EleWe give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers; Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father.” 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3
Colossians 3:12 – 17 says,
“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”
