Teach no other doctrine

“As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.” 1 Timothy 1:3-4

What was Timothy supposed to do?

He was entrusted with the responsibility of trying to stop these evil workers from spreading wrong doctrine.

What sort of wrong doctrine was it?

They were spreading ideology instead of helping people accept God’s plan of salvation. Their ideas of being saved were far from the truth of what the Apostles were teaching, and the false doctrine was such as would stir up questions and arguments among believers.

If you’ve been called take it upon you to

  1. teach no other doctrine,
  2. understand what it is that you affirm, and
  3. be faithful.

Paul say, “What I am eager for is that all the Christians there will be filled with love that comes from pure hearts, and that their minds will be clean and their faith strong, from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk, desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm, 1 Timothy 1:5 -7

The problem with some 21st century Believers is that they themselves “give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.” It’s they also who’ve strayed from a good conscience, and from a sincere faith. But “This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy…that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck.” 1 Timothy 1:18-19

In 2 Thessalonians 2:3,5,7,11-14 Paul says,

“[5] Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

[3] Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come , except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

[7] For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let , until he be taken out of the way.
[11] And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: [12] That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. [13] But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: [14] Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

“For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you,” (2 Thessalonians 3:7). I suppose you do.

Now he is instructing Timothy; put an end to these evil men’s myths and fables, “…according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust. And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry…for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.” 1 Timothy 1:11-12,16

Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

What ministry do you help in your church?

Bible verse of the day

Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.
