In Mark Chapter 9 is a story of one man who begged the disciples to cast out a demon out of his son, but they couldn’t do it. He said to Jesus, “whenever the demon is in control of him it dashes him to the ground and makes him foam at the mouth and grind his teeth and become rigid” (Mark 9:18).
Jesus said to his disciples, “Oh, what tiny faith you have; how much longer must I be with you until you believe? How much longer must I be patient with you? Bring the boy to me” (Mark 9:19). It is high time we show we’re concerned about other people’s sufferings.
The best way to help people is to listen to them, and not to argue. Listen to their concerns and feelings about what they’re going through.
Looking at the story above, both father and son were overwhelmed, and the son was at point of committing suicide. He had exhibited all types of suicidal behaviour; all the threats, attempts, gestures, and if the Lord had failed to help then that critical stage of a successful suicide was imminent.
Causes leading to potential suicide
The greatest of all is depression: i.e., as when one has the feelings or moods of sadness, despair, and discouragement. Depression is caused by so many things and loss is the big issue. It may be disruptive to an individual, causing sleeping disorders, hopelessness, self-condemnation, guilt, all manner of sicknesses, etc.
A person may not make statements that indicate he is considering suicide but through his behaviour may show that he’s suicidal, think of one they called Legion. In our story instead of arguing, the disciples should have assured the person that help is available. They should have assisted him in getting that help. The problem with religion is all our problem are said to be spiritually related. If they can’t diagnose your problem then they conclude “O he has a spirit.” Sometimes that’s not the case, psychological problems are real and can affect anyone. Jesus asked, “What’s all the argument about?” Before the disciples could answer the man said, “I begged the disciples to cast out a demon out of my son, but they couldn’t do it.”
Surely all of us experience times in our lives when we simply cannot face another day. There are times when life just doesn’t seem worth the agony and pain it forces us to endure. But I would like to assure someone today, don’t despair, don’t take your life – help is on the way.
However, as believers know also that someone’s life is dependent on your being concerned. “Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.” Mark 9:27
