“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” 1 John 1:8-10
What is sin?
First and foremost we got to know what sin is. Sin is rejecting God’s way and going your own way. It is a violation of God’s law. You can be guilty of sin by commission or omission. Psalm 90:8 says, “Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.” So it is possible to sin without fully realising it.
Apostle John sees ‘denial’ as a stumbling block; denial of a sin nature, and when we’ve committed acts of sin. But “If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”
There are Christians who claim to have reached a state of spiritual perfection. Some presume they’re good anyway. Many think their good deeds offset their bad deeds. “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” Isaiah 64:6
When you deny your sinfulness you deceive yourself. Actually you prove that you’ve not the truth – you call God a lair, and His word has no place in your life, period!
Listen to my advice; without confession there is no forgiveness. Confess your sins and God will forgive you for “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Accept full responsibility for your sins, and hope in the character of God! Daily we sin, and daily we should pray, “….forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen” (Matthew 6:12-13).
What a blessing it is to stop hiding, and be right with God? If you confess your guilt, God will pardon you. However first things first; stop deceiving yourself and recognize your sin for what it is! Then, openly confess your guilt to God. Approach Him directly, and specifically name how you have sinned against Him.
Do you know, many professing Christians have never truly repented?
Repentance is more than merely saying that you are sorry. Proverbs 28:13 says, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” You can’t be forgiven by going through outward motions of confession, and last but not least;
‘Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:8
