“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.” Proverbs 22:6-7
Parents teach a child what he or she needs to know. They do not however train children in a vacuum, but there are many factors which impacts how kids are raised, for instance peer groups, religion, government, workplace and social media. The scripture above shows us that a family is the first agent of that upbringing, then is race, religion, class and other society factors.
But while in the home “train up a child in the way he should go;” whether it’s about gender, creativity or other behaviours – do not lose heart. Also, don’t emphasise on spiritual matters only, and conformity or obedience but teach them behaviours that would be beneficial to them in later life.
Solomon said, “the rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.” All that means is teach them how the world works, and how to relate with the world around them. We do well to introduce them to our values and beliefs but that’s not all it is to life. It’s ok to be zealous but wrong when you’re overzealous. “Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church” (1 Corinthians 14:12).
Your kids should also know how to use objects – “and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
