“For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.” Romans 7:18,25
With the mind, I am to honestly face the truth and admit my inability to cope with any problem. But by my will, I open the door to lay hold of God’s will and his resources.
It is important to note: not that I will by my will-power to accomplish, but that my will is simply to open the door so as to receive power and performance from one greater than l. It is his performing power that’s key.
I like what Paul said in 2 Corinthians 3:4-5, “And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God.”
“And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness” (Romans 8:10). You’re just a vessel…God working in you as he so chooses. Jesus said, “I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me” (John 5:30). He said to his disciples, “Pray that ye enter not into temptation. And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:40-42). This is why you should pray, not yours but that his will be done.
“Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure” (Philippians 2:12-13). Your obedience must first come…and it must be fulfilled – you only need to obey God, obey his word that “worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”
