“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23
Who’s it that lives in your body? The spirit and the soul. These are the things which makes an individual; spirit, soul and body.
It is through the body that we relate to other people and the world around us. So the body plays an important part to who we are as it is that vehicle we need for every day life and to communicate with others. It is not possible to separate the body from from who we are, soul or self and spiritual.
There is a lot to self, and the three aspects that makes up an individual body – spirit, soul and body are the three objects that makes us behave differently over and over again, when each assumes control of the body.
I said the body plays an important part to who we are; i.e. to the spirit and to the soul alike for these would not function properly without it. ” What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” 1 Corinthians 6:19
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 also says, “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.”
The point here is you’re not your own; the soul claims the body that it’s his and so does the spirit and other elements too. Who controls you?
To what extend are you spirit, soul, body or the other elements who assumes control over you?
1 Corinthians 3:1-3 says, “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it , neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?”
Yes it’s true that our bodies sometimes are mere biological objects but they mean a lot to us (soul) as much as they do to God (spirit) who created them – “…ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you..” God himself resides in them by his Spirit. Your body and mine is always important to God who made them.
Remember what I said earlier;
“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” 1 Corinthians 2:12-13
God has given us his Spirit, not the spirit of the world. The reason he gave us his Spirit is so that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God, and the good news is, it’s all up to us that we should received him.
He’s freely given just as grace is, so is the Holy Ghost also a free gift. I hear Joel say,
“After I have poured out my rains again, I will pour out my Spirit upon all of you! Your sons and daughters will prophesy; your old men will dream dreams, and your young men see visions.” Joel 2:28
– He’s upon you all and in you all. “And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.” 1 Corinthians 3:23
I don’t know what has been your reason to to follow the faith? So many came to the faith and their reason is far from spiritual; may it’s because they were unhappy out there and some just wanted change. Some it was an issue of identity; because they thought church people lead happy and satisfying lives, and so they also wanted to transform theirs into supposedly happier lives. However, does reshaping or redefining who you’re? In the spiritual realm I don’t think so. But it’s really a good thing to know it’s possible that people can change. Identity is not something that’s fixed, you can improve yourself and change the way you feel about yourself and your role in society, and how you’re perceived by others, only if you take the right steps.
Do you know, people have some measure of freedom or opportunity to choose the identity they want?
We have some agencies that help us make those decisions about who we want to be – on top of that it’s the word of God.
Anyway, our body is both something we are and something we have. It is the first means of expressing our individuality and aspiration as well as our destiny. Your body can also be a way to challenge accepted societal ideas about what’s ‘normal’ or ‘natural’ by the way you look like – I like to be me, not that I conform to certain norms of peer pressures.
Who I am should be determined by the way I was created – that likeness and image of God in me.
Who’s it that lives in my body I choose, and that I allow. “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind of my body I myself serve the law of God; and my choice to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
