“This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.” 1 Timothy 3:1
You don’t have to go to college for a lot of years if you want to be a pastor, overseer, bishop, deacon, etc. However, there are preconditions associated with church ministry, and any believer desiring to preside over in any office should be able to prove or demonstrate in these capacities, i.e., that they’re capable of pleasing both God and men.
The office of a bishop
A bishop or pastor must be blameless;
- a husband of one wife,
- vigilant, circumspect
- sober, sensible
- of good behaviour, self controlled
- given to hospitality, friendly, showing love, hospitable
- apt to teach; capable, ready, of a mind, or given to teach others
- not a novice, not a new believer
- must have a good report, a good testimony
He must “not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity.” 1 Timothy 3:3-4
The office of a deacon
“Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.” 1 Timothy 3:8-9
- must be blameless,
- so must their wives be grave, not slanderers but sober and faithful in all things.
“Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.” 1 Timothy 3:12
- a husband of one wife
Let me say again, if your desire is to provide leadership in the church, just know it’s good! But there are preconditions:
“…that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” 1 Timothy 3:15
