Leadership and followership

A certain friend of mine asked me, “why do you always forward me sermons? I know where to go if I need to be preached to.” Fair enough! It made me think though and I asked the Lord, is this how things should be? I then reflected on the great commission, that we should go teach and make disciples. But do we go to church when we feel like going?

Anyway, followership is closely linked with leadership, and because the two are  interdependent, the outcome produced is great. There are two concepts Jesus left for his disciples, that of leadership, and followership, and every believer should embrace these conditions in order to be successful in their pilgrimage. Followership is a function of the follower, and a process of attaining one’s individual goal of being influenced by a leader to participate in group efforts towards one’s main goal. The problem is some believers still don’t know that “we are members one of another” (Ephesians 4:25). Worse when you keep following people who are bent on dividing us, you’ll totally be lost. Ephesians 5:30 says, “For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.” Let that sink in your spirit, we need one another.

Our leader is one, our Lord Jesus Christ, and we all are his followers. “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” 1 Timothy 2:5-6

So when I send you a sermon, or invite people to this website I am not declaring myself ‘Bruce Almighty’,   I’m rather saying let’s all be followers of His. We are all followers! However what we gain from that relationship can vary widely depending on our reasons for following, our enthusiasm, and the goals of the leader, (who of course is not your pastor but the Lord) and our own skills, methods and characteristics depending on how/whom you’ve learned, and in our case the Holy Ghost is our good teacher.

True, believers are empowered with the tools to choose, create, enrich and share, but obviously that has boundaries when dealing with God, it’s not who you trust that matters but God who should control the process. Our problem, people want to control the status quo.
