“But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.” Romans 7:6
Two things I am going to talk to you about today;
- the oldness of the letter, wherein many are held, and
- that we should serve in newness of spirit.
What shall we say then? Is the law sin?
God forbid. Nay. “The law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.” Romans 7:12.
But “the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.” Romans 7:10
He found it to be unto unto death not necessarily that it was to blame, but because sin took advantage of it, and “wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.” Romans 7:8
Sin was dead, dormant or inactive, but was reignited in me by the law: “for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.” Romans 7:7. But I’m carnal, I did that which was wrong.
How did I die?
I was sold under sin, (Romans 7:14). Sin taking advantage of the good law, that it might appear sin, worked death in me. I really wanted to do what is right, but I couldn’t. Instead I did what I hated, and so it was needful that I shade of the body of sin. Paul says, “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:3-4
How were I delivered?
“I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord, (Romans 7:25) that He died in my place and rose again together with me, that enabled me get married to another.
“Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:24-26). We are no longer under a schoolmaster and never to be brought into captivity again.
“But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.” Galatians 3:24-26.
- serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:2
