How we should give offerings

Read 1 Corinthians 16:1-4
Paul here is giving instruction on money collection, laying out an example for us of how, where and when we should give offerings.


People should know why they’re giving.

“…the money you are collecting to send to the Christians…” 1 Corinthians 16:1

How it is collected

  • let every one of you lay by him in store, 1 Corinthians 16:2

When it is collected

  • Upon the first day of the week, 1 Corinthians 16:2

Who should contribute

  • each one us, vs 2
  • same instructions to all churches, vs 1

Where the money you contribute comes from

  • you should put aside something from what you have earned during the week, vs 2

How much should you give

  • generous as you can
  • The amount depends on how much the Lord has helped you earn, vs 2

State of readiness

  • Don’t wait until I get there and then try to collect it all at once, vs 2

Liberality – give freely

  • When I come I will send your loving gift with a letter to Jerusalem, vs 3

Give to honest or truthful people

  • to be taken there by trustworthy messengers you yourselves will choose, vs 3

Who should keep it

  • whomever you delegate to deliver your gift.

How it is kept

  • put it in safe keeping
