Your journey to understanding spiritual warfare! – Psalm 48
What’s the impression you got when you first visited a city? It was breathtaking, wasn’t it? With all the tall towers, palaces, bulwarks, traffic and beautiful landscapes. Everything was tremendously arrayed! The feeling was even God is known in this place, with all the judgements, ”God is known in her palaces for a refuge” (Psalm 48:3) “Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth…” (Psalm 48:2).
But as time went by, as you stayed a little longer you became nervous about it, some were freaked out about it. “For, lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together. They saw it, and so they marvelled; they were troubled, and hasted away.” Psalm 48:4-5
“Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail.” (Psalm 48:6).
These kings had other intentions, they might have come to pick up a fight but what they saw terrified them, and they ran away. However, even for good intentions some places are such as would scare you.
Anyway, let’s talk a little bit about fear.
Fear invades and underlies the whole of life activities,
like the fear of failure, of change, of success, of rejection, of being abandoned, of loneliness, of the future, of the unknown and the endless list of phobias; anxiety along with anger, bitterness, resentment, guilt and envy.
Main causes of fear are self-concerns, self-interest and self-protection.
Sometimes fear is a necessary part of life, especially the fear of God. It tells you that something or someone is approaching into your space, and that person ends up affecting your mind and your emotions. Fear tells you that danger is about, yell or it tells you to call upon God to come and face your worry or fear. You are to replace fear with a deliberate trust and rest in God who lives in you, drawing upon Him for wisdom, strength and ability. Thus, fear triggers one more way in which God is manifested and revealed in your behaviour.
However, when fear takes hold of you, when you panic, think also of how great the Lord is, and praise him!Psalm 48:9 says, “We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple.” “For this great God is our God forever and ever. He will be our guide until we die.” Psalm 48:14
Talk to yourself, who God is, rehearse this reality and fear will properly disappear. For God can now be revealed in the situation.
Fear is part of living. We will always fear changes, new situations, and a sense of inadequacy will surround all situations. All this does reveal is the creatureness of my being and reminds us that we can’t handle anything in our own strength and wisdom. Rejoice that you can’t handle it because in each and every circumstance that you call upon the Lord Who is your strength, the more and more you grow into Him.
By faith and not by feelings, call upon the Lord and ask Him that His thoughts become your thoughts, His strengths your strengths, His adequacy your adequacy. This is what is called a normal Christian life. “God is known in her palaces for a refuge.” Psalm 48:3
“Great is the Lord , and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness. Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.” Psalm 48:1-2
