Christians should be the best citizens of all.

Christians are good citizens because they are honest, give no trouble to the state, and most importantly they pray for the state and the rulers. Even though they are loyal to God before they are loyal to the state, they are subject to governing authorities.

“Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” Romans 13:1

Every soul, your soul included; must be subject, (no excuse) to governing authorities because they are appointed by God and serve a purpose in His plan. There is no authority except that from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by Him.

“Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.” Romans 13:2

Those who resist will bring judgment on themselves; God uses governing authorities as a check upon man’s inclination to sinful desires. The country’s constitution can be an effective tool in resisting the effects of man’s fallen essence.

Since governments have authority from God, we are bound to obey them unless of course, they order us to do something in contradiction to the law of God. Then, we are commanded to obey God before man.

“For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.” Romans 13:3-4.

  • He is God’s minister,

They have a ministry in the plan and administration of God, just as church leaders are. However they should remember that they are only servants, and not gods themselves.

  • Do what is good, and you will have praise.

 The Christian’s responsibility towards government

Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due ; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour” Romans 13:7. Abide by the rules!

In a democracy we understand that there is a sense in which we are the government, and should not hesitate to help govern our democracy through our participation in the democratic process – bring it home!
