Praying to God

Lord, teach us to pray

Praying is getting an audience with God, not social media as some believers do. On that note, Leviticus 19:12 says, “And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the Lord.

If prayers are offered to God, there must then be a definite and conscious approach to Him, and a realisation also, that He is listening.

There must be power in your prayers also, and power does not mean that your mind is taken up with the thought of your need but his will. You should all the time be connected with God, or his presence. Jesus taught us how to pray, suggesting that when you pray you should not rush to making petitions. Instead He said, “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.” (Matthew 6:9-13). Train yourself to be more taken of Him than be hasty in your petitions. Worship him first, reverence, honour and give him the glory due to his name.

I said above, prayers are offered to God, because Jesus did the same; “Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared.” Hebrews 5:7

You need the same mindset and energy, and thanks be to God “the Spirit helpeth our infirmities.” (Rom 8:26). How did Jesus pray? Whether it was in public or in private He offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared.

He was heard because he didn’t take prayer lightly but each time he approached the throne of grace he did it with fear and trembling. Ought you not to do the same? For Jesus, “Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.” (Hebrews 5:8-9). He authored for us how we too ought to pray, not that from us profanity should go forth.

What ministry do you help in your church?

Bible verse of the day

He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
