In Matthew 10:16-17 Jesus says
“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues.”
“…Be as wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men…”
David asked, what can man do to me?
In Psalm 56:1-2 he cried,
“Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me. Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.”
He said beware of men, for it is men who long to conquer you, all their thoughts are how to harm you, they twist what you say, and then expect to get away with it. If you cry, it’s because of some people somewhere, who love to see you hurting. They will even scourge you in their synagogues. Don’t be fooled, rather be wise as serpents! You got to know something; it’s not everyone in church who wants you to go to heaven. David said, They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul. Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God” (Psalm 56:6-7). Beware of evil workers, and Philippians 3:2 says, “Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.” Beware of the scribes, and beware of leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Beware also of covetousness – “Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” 2 Peter 3:17-18
However, David realised something extraordinary, and said, “This one thing I know: God is for me!”
For the very day I called the Lord for help, the tide of battle turned, and my enemies flee!
He said I’m not afraid anymore of what man can do to me, for in God I put my trust.
He said, “Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee. For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?” Psalm 56:12-13
God who delivered your soul from death in the resurrection of his Son is also able to see you through to eternity.
