The hope of the gospel

Every believer needs to understand the expectations of the gospel; it is that you fulfil the word of God. Understanding ‘the hope of the gospel’ is important for your new life in Christ.

Paul says,

“…continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven…according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God” (Colossians 1:23-26).

Yes, it was preached to everyone; Hebrews 4:2 says, “For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.”

You’re called to fulfil the word of God, and fulfilling it is the only way to be successful.

Set yourself goals to;

  • know about the gospel and its expectations, and
  • develop a new life plan. Psalm 37:23 says, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord : and he delighteth in his way.” Don’t just serve God anyhow, or follow every wind of doctrine. But
  • each day see that you’re transcending from glory to glory. Paul says, “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Corinthians 3:18). Don’t settle for mediocre stuff. Decide to break some sinful cycles, and see that you’re benefiting from your walk with God, your new lifestyle.

Faith Issues

These are great stumbling blocks to the faith; denial and ambivalence.

Denial

Denial is defined as refusing to believe the reality about one’s life circumstances. It may be refusing to acknowledge that you’re born again, that you’ve changed and that you’re now a new creature. It maybe denial of sinful tendencies also, or the losses one has suffered that they are significant.

Believers often enter this journey with denial about certain habits or addictions. This behaviour should be pointed out and put off early in your christian walk and then put on the right spirit of faith.

A believer experiencing denial may exhibit some of the following erroneous beliefs:

  • How close can I walk to sin with out falling off
  • they refuse to admit sinful tendencies
  • think that they can solve their own problems, rather than surrendering totally at foot of the cross.
  • refuse to believe that sin is a problem, as well as their primary wrong choices.
  • insiston continuing to spend time with wrong people who enable their sin.

Ambivalence

Feelings of ambivalence often are present for the following reasons:

  • The believer associates sin with some positive emotional change.
  • Sin may have been employed as a coping strategy for solving problems, and the believer does not yet know of a better coping strategy.
  • The believer may feel too weak or helpless to break the powerful cycle of sin.

A believer’s feelings of ambivalence should be explored so you can recognize the ambivalence and identify of the underlying reasons. Understanding the believer’s reasons also will help direct the new disciple appropriately.

Motivation is what you need and it refers to how much the believer is impelled to act and desire to become. A believer may enter this journey already somewhat motivated because he or she recently “hit bottom” in some way. Such a “bottom” may be losing one’s job or one’s spouse, draining one’s bank account or getting arrested. Although these consequential life events may help to motivate the new believer, they may not be sufficient. Understanding ‘the hope of the gospel’ is important for your new life Christ and its responsibilities; “…continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven…according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God.”

Believers should not harbour mixed feelings or contradictory thoughts about their new faith – Believe! “Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.” Hebrews 4:1

God bless,

Laurence

He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
